The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota’s first attempt to break into the market for mid-size SUVs. It was developed in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki, who already offers a model known as the Grand Vitara as a sister vehicle. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is powered with two hybrid-only petrol engines, one of which is a 1.5-liter petrol mild-hybrid acquired from Maruti, while the other is Toyota’s own 1.5-liter petrol strong-hybrid. Both of these hybrids are fuelled by gasoline. There is also an all-wheel drive option available for the gasoline mild-hybrid engine in its manual configuration. The e-CVT transmission is the sole option available for pairing with the strong-hybrid engine. It competes with vehicles such as the Hyundai Creta, the Kia Seltos, the Skoda Kushaq, the Volkswagen Taigun, the Nissan Kicks, and the MG Astor.
