And rightfully so! In his entire journey, he was shunned by the society, threatened, lost and in dire straits but he never let go of his belief to let goodness, fairness and most importantly, love prevail in his business. Even as a student when he was asked to define business, his reply was, ‘It is next to love.’ When Jaipur Rugs was started in 1978, its founder, Nand Kishore Chowdhary, could not have imagined that after starting this business by borrowing five thousand rupees from his father after graduation, it would today become a company with a turnover of more than Rs. 750 crores. Today, their carpets are being exported to more than 75 countries. Jaipur Rugs has stores in major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, and Hyderabad, besides other countries like Italy, Russia (franchise), and China. Today, designs are created at this company in collaboration with the world’s top designers. When Nand Kishore Chowdhary first started recruiting artisans for his company, he faced a lot of resistance as women were not allowed to work. Nandkishore Chowdhary has prepared the development of the carpet industry in such a way that women have played an important role in it.
